Insurer: Take care of car keys
Posted :30-07-2007
Drivers need to take better care of their vehicle keys, according to car insurance provider elephant.co.uk.
Now that alarms and immobilisers are fitted to many cars, it is thought that thieves are stealing car keys from people's homes during a burglary.
Vehicle owners are urged by the car insurance specialist to keep their keys out of view, away from a door or window and if possible, in a lockable cupboard or chest of drawers within the home.
"Simple crime prevention methods are the most effective way to deter potential car thieves," elephant.co.uk managing director Ceri Assiratti said.
Many of the insurer's policy holders have reported their cars stolen after a burglary, including one incident where an individual had his keys stolen when a thief reached them through a letter box using a hook, she added.
Research by AA Insurance this month has found that motorists are paying record amounts for car insurance, with the average premium paid for third party, fire and theft insurance breaking through the £1,000 barrier for the first time to £1,006.
