Thieves 'getting more sophisticated'
Posted :31-07-2007
Thieves are becoming more sophisticated and pushing up the price of car insurance as a result, it has been claimed.
Although AA spokesperson Ian Crowder said theft was not as big a problem as in previous years, he explained that criminals are devising new ways to steal vehicles with a particular focus on expensive cars.
A common method is using a hook through a letter box and stealing keys from a hall table, Mr Crowder maintained, while more opportunistic thieves wait at petrol stations for people to accidentally leave their keys in the ignition while paying.
"Gangs now steal to order and will target posh vehicles like BMWs and Mercedes," he continued. "They do it by getting the keys."
Motorists can minimise their financial risk by purchasing comprehensive car insurance, which could help should a car be damaged or stolen.
