In-car music 'could reduce accident risk'
Posted :08-08-2007
A new survey has revealed that listening to music while in the car could lessen the chance of having an accident and making a car insurance claim.
Research from Sainsbury's Car Insurance found that 84 per cent of motorists said they feel more relaxed when driving if there is music playing, while 65 per cent agreed it keeps them more awake and half of those questioned said it helps them to concentrate.
Classical music and the pop genre were voted the most popular types of music to listen to, followed by rock and country tunes.
However, the company's car insurance manager Lucy Hunter suggested that while many enjoy listening to their favourite songs when behind the wheel, it is important to consider that it may also be a distraction for some.
"Pick your music accordingly," she said. "It may well be tempting to listen to music to perk yourself up but our advice if you feel tired is to pull over and have a break, similarly consider switching to something soothing if you're beginning to feel a little irate."
Meanwhile, related car insurance news this week included the claim that women drivers may be becoming more knowledgeable about their vehicle's maintenance.
A survey by Post Office discovered that 20 per cent of female motorists are able to change a tyre and more than half knew how to check their oil level.
