Car insurance customers warned over bald tyres
Posted :13-08-2007
Drivers are being urged to check their tyres regularly to ensure they have no bald patches and are safe for use on the road.
Non-profit organisation TyreSafe has emphasised the "vital" role properly maintained tyres play in a vehicle's handling and said bald tyres or poor tread can be a "major" risk.
According to the group, defective tyres can be particularly dangerous with regards to a car's handling on wet roads and motorists should visually check this part of a car weekly to ensure thorough upkeep.
"Bald tyres are a major road safety risk and can cause a vehicle to skid out of control, or in some cases, double the normal stopping distance," TyreSafe remarked in a statement.
Although recommendations about when tyres should be changed may vary, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents suggests that replacements should take place when the tread reaches a depth of three millimetres.
