Driving theory test to get more questions
Posted :15-08-2007
Driving theory tests for learner motorists and motorcyclists will include more questions from early September this year in a bid to push up standards.
Under changes announced by the UK's Driving Standards Agency, the extra multiple choice test questions are aimed at driving up pass marks and broadening candidates' knowledge.
The DSA believes that the new theory tests will improve road safety and is raising the number of questions from 35 to 50 on both the car and motorcycle bike tests, with a pass mark of 43 required.
Jill Lewis, DSA head of lifelong learning, said: "It is important that candidates prepare thoroughly for their theory tests in the same way they would any other exam. Increasing the number of questions means that the test ensures comprehensive coverage of the whole syllabus."
Under the changes, effective from September 3rd 2007, the length of time allowed for the multiple choice section of the theory test will increase to 57 minutes and fees will also rise to cover the extra cost. A theory test pass certificate is now required for motorcyclists and learner drivers to take their practical tests.
Learner drivers and motorcyclists choosing to enhance their practical skills, or using borrowed vehicles, must ensure that they are fully covered as a novice driver by the relevant motor insurance policy.
Taking a Pass Plus course after passing a driving test can help to drive down premiums for new drivers.
