Drivers at risk of ID theft, says car insurance firm
Posted :15-08-2007
Car insurance customers are being urged to change their habits when it comes to leaving sensitive information and documents in their vehicles.
According to Prudential Car Insurance, ten per cent of drivers may be leaving themselves vulnerable to identity theft by leaving paperwork such as statements and bills in their car.
In addition, motorists could be tempting opportunistic thieves by keeping highly-priced gadgets in a vehicle in full view. Prudential found that items such as mobile phones and iPods were some of the most likely devices to be left on a seat or dashboard.
And Gill Murphy, a spokesperson for the firm, said those without suitable car insurance might end up paying out should the worst happen.
"With the average cost of an iPod, work suit and laptop totalling around £900, drivers without adequate insurance who leave these items lying around could face a hefty bill if their car is broken into," she explained.
Thieves who steal sensitive data can use the information to create a false identity and apply for items such as credit cards and loans.
