Police enhance crackdown on motor insurance dodgers
Posted :29-08-2007
The need for up-to-date motor insurance was underlined today as North Yorkshire police improved their means of identifying those who avoid insuring their vehicles.
Following the launch of a helpline by the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) to assist police forces dealing with situations where there may be questions surrounding the insurance cover of a suspect vehicle, North Yorkshire Police have subscribed to the service.
Chief executive of the MIB Ashton West stated that when traffic police encounter a vehicle that does not appear on the motor insurance database (MID), a situation where the driver claims to be insured may arise.
"In these circumstances the police helpline can provide the officer with a definitive answer in the majority of cases by undertaking additional investigations beyond making a MID enquiry," he told the York Press.
North Yorkshire is one of 29 police forces in England and Wales to have subscribed to the helpline, with the remaining 14 due to join by the end of 2007.
Over 78,000 vehicles were seized by police in 2006 due to having no motor insurance.
