Car insurance on holiday hire cars 'not to be relied on alone'
Posted :30-08-2007
British holidaymakers have been advised not to rely solely on the car insurance provided for their hired motor to protect them while on holiday, according to a leading insurer.
Halifax Travel Insurance stated that motor insurance for a hire car will not cover the range of risks covered by the majority of travel insurance policies.
This news follows research indicating that more than 17.5 million Brits have taken a road trip in the past year, with British motorists completing the equivalent of 600,000 journeys around the globe in the past 12 months.
Senior manager of pricing and underwriting for Halifax Travel Insurance Paul Birkenhead stated: "The Foreign and Commonwealth Office highlights foreign roads as amongst the top five locations for injuries to occur to British holidaymakers.
"Britons should always aim to hire a vehicle from a reputable firm and ensure you wear a helmet if driving a moped or motorbike."
A recent study by insurancewide.com advised motorists to keep a copy of their motor insurance in their vehicle in case they should be stopped by police.
