Motor insurance company warns of drink-driving dangers
Posted :30-08-2007
Some 19 per cent of 17 to 18-year-old drivers admit to drink-driving and 14 per cent drive while on drugs, according to a study by motor insurance company Co-operative Insurance (CIS) and road safety charity Brake.
Almost a third (32 per cent) of respondents admitted to being a passenger in a vehicle being driven by an individual under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Government statistics show that per mile driven, drivers aged between 17 and 19 are some 14 times more likely to be in a drink-related crash that results in injury than their 35 - 49 year-old counterparts.
CIS and Brake are supporting the transport select committee's recommendation to include road safety and driver education on the national curriculum in order to address the attitudes of teenagers to driving before they get behind the wheel.
According to research by Zurich Insurance earlier this year, UK teen house parties have resulted in some £136 million of damage to their parent's homes.
