'Millions' choose driving over walking
Posted :07-09-2007
A new survey has discovered that 23 per cent of Brits would rather drive a 1,000-metre distance than walk it.
According to research by whatcar.com, the distance - which is estimated to equal a 12-minute stroll - would take between two and 12 minutes to drive, meaning it may not even save time to get behind the wheel.
The findings were announced alongside other statistics revealed by the online magazine, including the discovery that 30.2 per cent of drivers think the environment is very important and 14.6 per cent say the ecological impact of their vehicle is of equal concern.
In addition, 42.7 per cent of respondents said they never used public transport while 29.9 per cent would not stop driving into towns and cities unless the congestion charge topped £20.
"Motorists do care about the environment and are aware of their vehicle's impact," remarked Iain Reid, producer of whatcar.com.
"But
the car is very much an integral part of everyday life for many and something they are not prepared to give up."
The motoring website also offers new car reviews and tips for drivers.
