Car insurance dodgers 'face the crusher'
Posted :11-09-2007
Consumers who avoid paying their motor insurance face having their vehicles crushed, it has been reported.
Local authorities in the East Sussex town of Lewes seized some 50 vehicles that were uninsured or untaxed over a three-day period, according to the East Sussex Argus.
Many of the vehicles will be crushed should owners be unable to provide proof of tax and motor insurance.
David Gray, Lewes district council's lead councillor for the community, told the publication: "This operation has been a tremendous success in removing unsightly vehicles that are a real nuisance to local communities as well as a potential danger."
He urged consumers with vehicles that were un-roadworthy to contact authorities and have the vehicle removed free of charge to avoid a fine and the seizing of their motor.
A study carried out by insurer Towergate earlier this year indicated that more than a quarter of caravans on Britain's road are not covered by insurance.
