Car insurance avoiders caught by Lancashire police
Posted :14-09-2007
Drivers thought to be without motor insurance were taken off the road by Lancashire police as part of a crackdown, it has been reported.
Checkpoints were set up in a number of locations across the county and automated number plate reading (ANPR) technology was implemented to identify suspect vehicles.
Databases were used to search through the registration plates of thousands of vehicles in order to find those that had no insurance for their motor, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.
PC Marc Rigby of Rossendale police told the publication: "The ANPR system allows us to identify vehicles that we suspect are being used by criminals and we can keep track of them on the borough's roads."
He added that law-abiding citizens do not have to be concerned by the technology.
The latest Sainsbury's car insurance premium index recently revealed that the cost of protecting motors is steadily increasing, as the average vehicle premium increased by some £19.80 in the 12-month period ending July 2007.
