Third of parents unsure of child car seat laws, says Churchill Car Insurance
Posted :18-09-2007
Research released by Churchill Car Insurance has suggested that a third (32 per cent) of parent drivers are unaware of changes in the law made in 2006 regarding child car seats.
Some 23 per cent of driving parents with children aged between three and 12 don't use a child seat at all, according to the figures.
Under the law, children up to the age of 12 must ride in safety seats when in a car, as must those under 1m 35cm tall.
Frances Browning, spokesperson for Churchill Car Insurance, commented: "The law was introduced to force parents to take child safety in the car seriously.
"It's worrying to see that so many parents are either unaware or deliberately flouting the law. Irrespective of the reason, they are putting lives at risk."
Data from Child Car Seats indicates that some 30 children aged 11 or under are killed while travelling in vehicles each year and 400 are seriously injured.
The Think! road safety campaign estimates that the changes in the law could prevent more than 2,000 child injuries or deaths every year.
