Brit drivers like to blow their own trumpet, says esure car insurance
Posted :24-09-2007
Some 90 per cent of British motorists use their car horn inappropriately, according to new research by esure car insurance.
The Highway Code states that motorists should not use their horn while stationary on the road or while driving in built up areas between 11:30 pm and 07:00 am unless another automobile poses a danger.
"Impolite" road users were found to be one of the main reasons that horns were used, with more than 70 per cent of respondents stating that they beeped at them.
Head of risk and underwriting for the firm Mike Pickard attributed the stresses of modern life to the impatience of drivers.
"We're always looking at ways to help drivers reduce the likelihood of having an accident and an alternative sounding car horn could help to make the roads a safer, less stressful place this summer," he added.
An elephant trumpeting topped a list of alternative noises for a car horn to make, second place went to a lion's roar and a cow mooing came in third.
According to recent research by Zurich, some 85 per cent of drivers risk having to claim on their car insurance by leaving possessions such as CDs and DVD players in their cars.
