'Poor immigrant driving' increases crashes and car insurance claims
Posted :26-09-2007
An offhand attitude towards drink-driving by some people who have moved to the UK from another country has resulted in a rise in road traffic accidents, potentially increasing the need to make car insurance claims, a police chief has stated.
Chief inspector Rick Dowell, head of Dorset Police's traffic unit, suggested that an insufficient knowledge of British road rules on the part of some immigrants may also contribute to a rise in the number of crashes, reports the Daily Mail.
"We feel a lot of it is down to education. The attitude of Eastern European drivers to road safety is not as educated as ours in this country," he added.
Mr Dowell added that drink driving legislation is not as rigorously enforced in many eastern European countries as it is in Britain and that it is possible that some immigrants do not appreciate the dangers it poses.
Car insurance provider esure recently reported that some 90 per cent of motorists violate the Highway Code on a regular basis by inappropriately using their car horn.
