Car insurance consumers beware; top 100 speed cameras revealed
Posted :01-10-2007
The country's top speed cameras have been revealed - the top 100 of which handed out a million penalty points last year, in news that may be of interest to car insurance consumers.
According to the Telegraph, the yellow and grey Gatso cameras brought in more than £18 million in the last year, snapping away at speeding drivers every two minutes.
Penalty points can result in a hike in car insurance premiums when consumers come to renew their policies.
Founder of the driving campaign site Safespeed.org.uk told the publication that the 100 sites will convince the public that speed cameras are about money rather than road-user safety.
"Drivers know - as if by instinct - that speed cameras don't help them drive more safely," he added.
In related news, the Daily Mail recently reported that North Somerset council cut a third of its funding for speed cameras after it claimed they had become more about making money than saving motorists' lives.
