Drivers 'risk car insurance claims and worse' on rural roads
Posted :05-10-2007
Road users are likely to risk more than just a car insurance claim when driving on country roads, a study has indicated.
Motorists are three times more likely to be killed on a rural road compared to an urban one, warns a new scheme by the government.
The Department of Transport's new Think! Rural Speed campaign urged drivers not to travel too fast as rural areas can tempt road-users to drive faster than the conditions they are in allow them to do safely.
Jim Fitzpatrick, the road safety minister, stated that motorists should drive with as much care on a rural road as they would if they were in a built-up area.
"The 'national' 60 mph speed limit is a maximum, not an expectation, and drivers must match their speed to the road characteristics and weather conditions they are experiencing as well as factoring in unpredictable hazards - like sharp bends, limited visibility or even animals - which can require a quick reaction," he added.
Last month saw the launch of a newly-revised Highway Code that offers up-to-date advice and rules for all road users - including car insurance customers - to take note of.
