Car insurance claims 'risked through careless key habits'
Posted :08-10-2007
One in ten careless motorists risk making a claim on their car insurance as they do not keep a spare set of keys in case they lose the original, it has been reported by a vehicle breakdown cover provider.
According to a survey by Britannia Rescue, some 16 per cent of drivers have reported losing their keys permanently at least once in the past.
The firm states that replacing an everyday car key is now four times more expensive than it was a decade ago due to car manufacturers developing increasingly advanced security systems for cars.
Martin Milliner, spokesperson for Britannia Rescue, commented that upon losing a car key, getting back behind the wheel may prove costly if work has to be carried out on the ignition or security system as well as physically replacing the key.
He also advises consumers to keep spare keys in sensible places.
Can manufacturer Chevrolet recently released research stating that careless habits with regard to driving cost drivers some £350 million in damaged groceries as they are transported home each year.
