New cars 'should have braking systems to reduce accidents' and car insurance claims
Posted :09-10-2007
All new cars in the European Union (EU) should be fitted with sophisticated braking technology to cut road-user deaths by 2009, as well as reducing the number of car insurance claims made, the EU executive has stated.
Reuters states that Brake Assist Systems (BAS) have the potential to save more than 1,000 lives on an annual basis by avoiding crashes, reducing the stopping distance of cars and reducing the speed of a vehicle before an accident takes place, asserts the European Commission.
The news agency asserts that the system includes sensors, that alert motorists to possible collisions and provides vehicles with extra braking power - features that could also reduce the need for a potentially costly car insurance claim.
In other road safety news, it was recently reported by the government that road-users are three times more likely to be killed on a rural road that one in a built-up area.
