Uninformed women risk car insurance claims 'due to poor tyre awareness'

New research has indicated that some 21 per cent of women do not know about the correct amount of pressure that should be in the tyres of their cars - potentially running the risk of a crash and a claim on their car insurance - it has been announced.

Tyre safety organisation TyreSafe has announced the results of the study to coincide with Tyre Safety Month, which runs throughout October.

The body warns that under-inflated tyres, along with bad driving practices, can prove to be a serious safety risk - which may result in the need to make a car insurance claim should an accident occur - as well as being harmful to the environment.

Fifth Gear presenter Vicki Butler-Henderson commented: "Drivers are clearly not aware of the dangers of driving a car with severely under-inflated tyres. I have recently been testing a car with tyres at low pressures and badly worn and the combination is potentially deadly."

Tyre Safety Month aims to highlight the dangers road-users face by using under-inflated or defective tyres.
