Smoking the 'biggest in-car peeve'
Posted :17-10-2007
Smoking has topped a list of bad habits that annoy fellow passengers and may cause a driver to become distracted and lead to the need to make a costly car insurance claim, new research has indicated.
The recent YouGov poll found that smoking was the landslide winner of irritating habits, coming ahead of backseat driving, talking non-stop and having an mp3 player to loud.
Commissioned by Craigslist, a classified ads website, the study also suggested opening vehicle windows too far - or not far enough - was as irritating as wanting to listen to The Archers.
Jim Buckmaster, chief executive of Craigslist, commented that ride-sharing is becoming increasingly popular.
"But we urge those considering it to try and find out first whether their prospective fellow passengers are likely to prove compatible," he added.
Regarding The Archers, Mr Buckmaster stated: "I am aware that some people find it deeply annoying."
Research by esure recently advised smokers not to light up behind the wheel as it may be deemed by the police as an action that impairs the driver's control of the car and as such can result in penalty points and increased car insurance premiums.
