Central European Time 'could reduce car insurance claims'
Posted :31-10-2007
A national road safety charity has urged the government to move away from the UK's time zone system and adopt Central European Time (CET) in an attempt to make roads safer.
Brake has referred to the current Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) system as "archaic", noting that the early morning and evening periods of the day are the most dangerous for road-users.
The charity states that a conversion to CET would result in increased visibility at crucial times of the day, which may result in a reduction in crashes, car insurance claims and casualties.
Jools Townsend, head of education at Brake, notes: "The practice of using GMT is rooted in tradition, rather than common sense. Research shows that switching to CET could save more than 100 lives each year."
Earlier this month, Brake expressed concern regarding access for emergency vehicles should the hard shoulder become a regular lane on British motorways after a pilot scheme was trialled on the M42.
