Car insurance firm calls for more road safety education
Posted :01-11-2007
Car insurance provider esure has called for increased road safety education to be made available for children in schools.
Such appeals come after the publication of research by the government, which indicates that drivers under the age of 21 were responsible for 15 per cent of all UK motoring convictions in 2005.
This figure represents nearly three times more than the age group's proportion of the driving population would warrant.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting for the company, commented: "We believe that young people need education about the dangers of driving irresponsibly while still at school and before they ever get behind the wheel."
He added that the car insurance firm believes that while many young people possess the skills to use the road safely, their attitudes towards risk, speed and the law are poor and should be addressed through education.
Road safety charity Brake recently stated that roads could be made safer for drivers if the UK adopted Central European Time, which would increase the amount of daylight in the evenings.
