Saab move to prevent car insurance claims through sleepiness
Posted :12-11-2007
Car manufacturer Saab has developed a system to tackle two of the most common causes of road accidents and car insurance claims.
Driver drowsiness and inattentiveness are countered with the Driver Attention Warning System's text and voice messages as soon as inattention or sleepiness is detected.
The system uses two cameras which focus on the motorist's eyes, software analyses eye-lid movement to determine the onset of drowsiness or when the driver is not looking at the road ahead.
Should a driver display signs of not paying proper attention, the car will warn them to pull over until they reset the system.
Arne Nabo, head of Saab's Human Vehicle Integration Team, commented: "It is a fact that many drivers do not stop and get out of the car if they are feeling drowsy. So we are now trying to help drivers to help themselves."
Recent research by Admiral suggested that households that own more than one car are 22 per cent less likely to be involved in a crash than their single vehicle counterparts.
