Campaigners welcome crackdown on fast drivers
Posted :13-11-2007
Road safety activists have welcomed plans that could see motorists who drive too quickly in restricted areas accrue six points on their licence and a £100 fine. This would double the existing penalty of three points, meaning that drivers would face a larger increase in their car insurance costs should they be caught driving over the speed limit. Casualty reduction officer for Northamptonshire Police PC Stephen Harris told the Northampton Chronicle that speed is not the only contributor to crashes on roads. "Although there is clear evidence that you are at more risk if you are hit by someone travelling at high speeds," he added. Northamptonshire county council cabinet member for community safety Liz Tavener called for people to become better educated about the potentially fatal dangers of speeding. A recent study by Admiral stated that people who own more than one car are 22 per cent less likely than single car households to be involved in a motoring accident.
