'Record numbers' of car insurance dodgers caught
Posted :14-11-2007
A record number of motorists who break the law by driving without car insurance are seeing their vehicles seized and crushed.
Such are the findings of the Association of British Insurers (ABI), which released figures today at its annual motor conference.
Over 100,000 uninsured vehicles have been impounded by police this year, compared to 78,000 in 2006.
Of those seized, some 45,000 have been crushed.
Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health at the ABI, comments that uninsured drivers often drive vehicles not fit for the roads and that they contribute to an increase in premiums for honest motorists.
"These figures show that the determination of the insurance industry and the police to drive them from our roads is beginning to bear fruit," he adds.
In recent weeks the ABI announced that insurance providers uncover and prevent fraudulent claims worth over £1 million on a daily basis.
