Drivers without borders
Posted :14-11-2007
Increased inter-country driving has led to more collisions on roads, according to a report published today by the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
As such, in conjunction with a number of other road safety organisations the association has made a number of proposals to reduce the frequency of collisions - and in turn the number of car insurance claims made - in the European Union.
Director general of the ABI Stephen Haddrill comments that with 45 differences in road laws between member states of the EU, it is hardly a shock that so many more collisions are taking place due to cross-border driving.
"We call on the UK government and the European Commission to recognise the scale of the problem and build on the first steps they have taken to ensure that drivers can travel more safely throughout Europe," he adds.
Also today, the ABI announced that so far this year, some 100,000 motorists caught driving with no car insurance have had their vehicles seized and nearly half (45,000) have been crushed.
