'E-car insurance' to be introduced
Posted :15-11-2007
Motorists will be able to receive their car insurance certificates by email in the future, according to road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick.
Speaking at the Association of British Insurers' (ABI) Motor Conference, Mr Fitzpatrick announced that moves will be taken to allow drivers to obtain their documents via computer, reducing the amount of paperwork and time it takes to cover themselves.
The ABI has been calling for such a change in the law for some time and stated that it regards the news as "a success".
Justin Jacobs, ABI assistant director of property, motor and liability commented: "The move will save the industry between £5 million and £10 million a year. Electronic delivery also has the benefit of being more environmentally-friendly."
The association announced in recent days that over 100,000 vehicles without car insurance have been seized in roadside checks so far this year, some 45,000 of which have been crushed.
