Careless drivers 'told off for risking car insurance claims'
Posted :19-11-2007
Over 1,400 careless road users have received letters from the police after leaving valuables in their cars on display.
As part of attempts to reduce the number of opportunistic thefts from vehicles, police have sent details of the property left on show to drivers.
Drivers risked having to make a claim on their car insurance policy by leaving expensive possessions such as mp3 players, money, mobile phones and Christmas presents on display in their automobiles.
Inspector June Chessell of Fulwood police told the Preston Reporter: "I was staggered by the number of vehicles left with property openly on view and would appeal to motorists to lock things away in the boot."
She added that significant reductions in car crime have been seen since the scheme has been implemented and that she was confident that crime had been reduced and the vehicle owners had become more aware of the dangers of leaving possessions on display.
Insurer Admiral recently identified London as the car crime capital of the UK, with four of its districts being named in the top ten hotspots for the act over the past 18 months.
