Increased car insurance for 'celebrities'

Though many people dream of fame, one downside that may have been overlooked is the rise in car insurance costs that can result from stardom.

Online car insurance firm elephant.co.uk has suggested that premiums are likely to go up for those in the public eye.

The car insurance provider decided to put the cost of celebrity to the test and compared the rates for celebrities and their everyday alter egos.

It found that Big Brother star Jade Goody was likely to pay 22 per cent more than Jade Goody the dental nurse from south-east London.

Managing director of elephant.co.uk Brian Martin highlighted the downsides that arise from being famous.

"Celebrities have to pay more for things like insurance just because they are famous," he said

The website outlined that higher premiums were charged due to the increased risk of having other celebrities in the car and the significant costs that would incur if there was an accident.

Meanwhile, insurance provider Admiral recently found that those households who own more than one car are 22 per cent less likely to be involved in a crash than people with only one vehicle.
