Hundreds caught 'flouting road laws'
Posted :11-12-2007
Several hundred motorists were caught breaking road rules, which could see them receive penalty points and increased car insurance premiums following a crackdown by police.
Devon and Cornwall Constabulary stopped around 1,000 drivers for a variety of motoring offences during the campaign, which was codenamed Operation Vortex.
Misdemeanours included speeding, driving while using a mobile phone and failing to wear a seatbelt.
Inspector Richard Pryce, of the Roads Policing Unit, commented: "It must be a salutary lesson to some who will now face court appearances, driving bans, points on licences and fines."
He added that the aim of projects such as Operation Vortex is to make the roads safer for law-abiding citizens and deal with those who take risks that can endanger the lives of others.
The Highway Code states that mobile phones and handheld microphones are not safe to use while driving and that hands-free equipment is also likely to be a distraction.
