Drivers urged to avoid car insurance claims 'via vigilance'
Posted :12-12-2007
Motorists have been urged to take extra care and adopt thorough security habits when leaving their cars.
Police have advised road users not to leave their keys in their vehicles while they deal with another matter, such as paying for petrol or returning to the house while the vehicle warms up.
The guidance follows a dozen female drivers falling victim to car thieves in the Stockport region within the last two months, the majority of whom left their keys in their unattended vehicles.
Other advice was also offered by police officers.
Detective constable Glen Draper of Stockport CID told the BBC: "By ensuring that keys are not left easily accessible through letterboxes or windows, the public can help us to reduce offences even further."
Greater Manchester police recently recommended that drivers remove all valuables from their vehicles when they are not in use after releasing a list of car thieves' top ten Christmas steals, which included number plates, mobile phones, CD players and items of clothing.
