'Do not leave cars unattended while defrosting'
Posted :18-12-2007
An increase in the number of car insurance claims for theft are seen when the weather grows colder, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba).
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate executive at Biba, explains that many owners return to their homes after they begin defrosting their car to allow the process to take place.
In many cases, drivers will return to where they left their vehicle to find it has gone.
"So if you are going to take a couple of minutes to defrost your car, make sure you stay with the car," he states.
Mr Trudgill adds that while motorists are doing the "sensible thing" by defrosting their car, they should be careful not to put their vehicle at risk by leaving it.
He concludes that car insurance providers will be "quite unlikely" to pay out as there is an argument that sufficient care has not been taken.
Earlier this year, Sainsbury's Bank estimated that over 121,000 households may have had unattended cars stolen between 2000 and 2005.
