Mobile phones 'a serious threat to road safety'
Posted :20-12-2007
Car insurance provider Direct Line has welcomed the potential two-year jail sentences for drivers caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel.
Motor spokesperson at the firm Carmel McCarthy states that the use of such devices while driving can be a "major distraction and a serious threat to road safety", adding that the company welcomes any legislation that promotes responsible driving.
She added that the introduction of more stringent rules and heavier penalties helps to raise public awareness of the dangers of driving while using such gadgets.
Ms McCarthy concluded that earlier this year, research by the car insurance provider indicated that at any given time, one million UK road users were using their mobile phones, without a hands-free kit, while driving.
Mobile phones may be the source of other car insurance worries for motorists, as recent research by Zurich suggested that they make up a proportion of the £3.9 billion left in vehicles, which could tempt thieves to break in and steal them.
