Where you drive internationally 'could affect car insurance'
Posted :28-12-2007
British drivers are being warned to check their cover carefully with their insurer before driving overseas, as they are not automatically covered for motoring outside the European Union (EU).
Adrian Webb, esure head of corporate communications, cautioned: "Unless you've let your insurer know and your insurer has agreed and logged where you are taking your car, you will be devoid of cover completely. In fact you'll be driving illegally."
UK car insurance policies tend to provide third party cover for damages to other people or vehicles within the EU. However, cover is voided for travel outside the EU unless pre-arrangements have been made with an insurer or broker.
The British Insurance Brokers Association recommends that all British drivers taking to the wheel outside the EU have their vehicles serviced before setting off, familiarise themselves with the motoring laws of countries they are visiting, and contact brokers or insurers to ensure they have adequate cover.
