Windscreen clearers 'in hot water'
Posted :04-01-2008
Many drivers may risk a claim on their car insurance when they try to thaw out their windscreens, according to new research.
A study by car care firm Comma suggests that nearly a third (30 per cent) of motorists between the ages of 19 and 21 use hot water to clear their car windscreen, which could risk cracking the glass.
However, older road users appear to be more savvy to the potentially costly damage they could cause to their automobile as less than one in ten drivers between the ages of 51 and 55 use hot water.
Younger drivers surveyed stated that rather than traditional ice scrapers, they used credit cards, books, CD cases and even their fingernails to clear their windscreens.
North Yorkshire police driving instructor Dave Goudie recently advised road users to ensure that they have de-icer in their screenwash bottle to make clearing icy windscreens as easy as possible.
