Uninsured driving rates 'have gone down in the last 2 years'
Posted :15-01-2008
The numbers of people driving without car insurance have gone down by at least ten per cent over the past 24 months, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba).
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for Biba, stated in recent days that police now have new powers, resources and technology at their disposal, which can make catching insurance dodgers an easier task.
He notes that they have access to the motor insurance database and the right to seize uninsured vehicles, as well as cameras that can automatically read number plates.
"If a registration goes past, it scans and blips if it is an uninsured vehicle and sends a message to the police to say that it's an uninsured vehicle," Mr Trudgill explains.
According to data from the Motor Insurer's Bureau, a total of 160 deaths on the roads each year in the UK are caused by drivers who do not have any car insurance and 23,000 people are injured in accidents involving those that do not have motor cover.
