Access to car insurance database 'helps police'
Posted :17-01-2008
Increased access to the motor insurance database and the power to seize uninsured vehicles as well as resources such as automatic number plate reading cameras help the police solve other crimes.
Such is the assertion of Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for the British Insurance Brokers' Association, who notes that in 2006 some 78,000 vehicles with no car insurance were seized by police, rising to 150,000 in 2007.
"It's great because it also helps solve other crimes. Usually criminals use a vehicle to aid in their criminal activity and it's quite likely that, being the type of people that they are, they don't bother to buy insurance," he adds,
Mr Trudgill concludes that the technological advances have been very useful for police forces across Britain.
According to the Motor Insurers' Bureau, people with no car insurance cost their law-abiding counterparts a total of £500 million on an annual basis.
