'Avoid car insurance claims on icy roads'
Posted :30-01-2008
As the Met Office warns motorists of a cold snap which is due to hit many parts of the UK tomorrow, the Royal Bank of Scotland and Green Flag give advice which could reduce the likelihood of a car insurance claim.
Green Flag advises drivers to use major roads for journeys rather than quieter routes as it may be more likely that they will be gritted.
Motorists should also beware of black ice as it can be difficult to spot and keep warm clothes in their cars to decrease the risk of getting too cold should they become stuck in snow.
Daniel Robinson, a spokesperson for Green Flag, explains: "Driving in icy and snowy conditions is never easy and drivers should be careful to keep plenty of distance between cars."
He advises motorists to avoid rushing and give more warning than usual to other road users before turning, stopping and changing lanes.
Meanwhile, research by Abbey suggests that 11 per cent of all homes in the UK have suffered some form of damage as a result of bad weather during the last five years.
