'Millions' victims of icy incidents
Posted :01-02-2008
More than six million drivers in the UK have has had a road accident while driving in wintry conditions, according to research commissioned by esure car insurance.
The firm notes that poorly-gritted roads are likely to result in almost a third (31 per cent) more accidents over the winter period than in the summer months.
Head of risk and underwriting at the provider Mike Pickard comments: "It is clear that some local councils could be doing more during winter to ensure all small roads in their area are gritted thoroughly, to help improve the dangerous driving conditions for motorists."
Continuing, he notes that it is very important to be aware of road safety during the winter months and judge when it is not dangerous to drive.
Meanwhile, Sainsbury's Bank recently advised consumers to not leave their cars unattended while the engine warms up as opportunistic thieves could take advantage of the situation, potentially resulting in the need to make a car insurance claim.
