Car insurance 'will cover EU travel'
Posted :12-02-2008
Road users planning a trip to a destination within the European Union (EU) were reminded today that they do not need to extend their car insurance policy before they set off by the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
Malcolm Tarling, a spokesperson for the ABI, explains that UK car cover will protect drivers for the minimum legal requirement of the country they are driving in, providing they are in the EU.
"Assuming you are going to a country in the EU, in theory you don't have to do anything, because your policy will automatically cover you," he states.
Mr Tarling notes that motorists should be aware that while they will be protected to some extent, it may not be to the same degree that they are in the UK.
Research by car insurance provider Zurich carried out last year suggests that 28 per cent of road users who have driven abroad do not check their policy to see if it is valid in the countries they are travelling through.
