'Check car cover' before driving in Europe
Posted :18-02-2008
There is no "hard and fast" rule pertaining to car insurance on the continent, the AA stated today.
Ian Crowder, public relations manager for the motoring services provider, advises consumers to check their policy to see if they are covered before heading to Europe.
He explains that some documentation will allow a motorist to travel to the continent without doing anything while other policies will require consumers to make their provider aware of the trip and some may require a payment to be made.
"If you do have an accident when you travel abroad, you'll find that
you've got the expense of getting your car removed and so on, which wouldn't be covered by your insurance if you haven't extended your comprehensive cover to drive in Europe," Mr Crowder concludes.
According to figures from the RAC Foundation, some three million British road users head to Europe by ferry or Channel Tunnel every year.
