Credit crunch benefits tourist industry ? Campervan insurance
Posted :30-09-2008
The county of Rutland has proved that the credit crunch is making more people consider a break in Britain rather than travel abroad, it has been reported.
Rutland received a boost of £80 million to its economy from visitors last year, an increase of £5 million from 2006, according to the Rutland and Stamford Mercury.
In news that may interest campervan insurance holders, visitor numbers also increased last year by 18,000, with 1.6 million people taking a break in the county.
Rutland county councillor Peter Jones said with the credit crunch and the uncertainty of foreign travel the idea of a three-day break is much more attractive.
"We've noticed a considerable increase in short stay visits where people come to cycle, to walk and to enjoy the countryside."
VisitBritain has also claimed that British people are taking lots of shorter breaks spread throughout the year rather than one two-week holiday.
The agency revealed that the interest in UK farmstay holidays has more than doubled in the last year further proving that more breaks are being taken closer to home.
