Technology in cars 'distracting drivers' - Motorhome insurance
Posted :15-10-2008
Drivers are becoming distracted by technology such as radios, CDs and mobile phones, according to a report by the Royal Automobile Club (RAC).
Research revealed nearly half of drivers questioned admit gadgets in their car attracted their attention away from the road, in news which may interest holders of motorhome insurance.
Over half said radio players are the main distraction, followed by 35 per cent citing heating controls, 34 per cent saying SatNav and 32 per cent claiming mobile phones.
David Bizley, RAC technical director, said in-car technology has come a long way since the late 1980s, with the advances falling into two categories.
"Active technologies such as in-car entertainment are not always positive as they can cause distraction, while passive technologies, such as anti-locking brake systems (ABS), are undervalued," he said.
The research showed only 70 per cent of drivers knew they had ABS, even though it is compulsory by law for all new cars to be fitted with them.
In recent motoring news it has been reported a Canadian company has developed a gadget which can hold calls or text messages until a car stops.
