Drivers support speed limiters for cheap insurance
Posted :14-12-2004
Most UK drivers would be prepared to have a speed limiter fitted to their car if it meant cheaper insurance, according to a new survey.
Confused.com commissioned the survey of 1,000 motorists, 72 per cent of which supported speed limiters.
The study also showed that 14 per cent would not need any financial incentive to fit the limiter, while 58 per cent view it as a fair trade-off for cheaper car insurance.
Kate Armstrong, managing director of Confused.com believes that accidents would be notably cut by their introduction.
"A third of all accidents are speed related and this costs the UK's motorists billions of pounds through higher premiums each year," she said.
"We know that for every 1mph reduction in speed, casualties decrease by about 5 per cent. We also know that speed regulators would reduce crashes involving deaths or injuries by 20 per cent."
The Department for Transport (DfT) has commissioned trials into Intelligent Speed Adaptation equipment (ISA), which limit cars from exceeding the speed limit in any given area. When a car reaches this limit, the accelerator pedal vibrates and resists, forcing the driver to press the pedal hard to exceed the limit.
