School run reduction could bring down premiums
Posted :31-01-2005
Parents are being advised to find alternative ways to driving their children to school to cut accidents and to receive cheaper car insurance.
According to insurance firm More Than, school run journeys have risen by 20 per cent in the past decade, leading to an increase in accidents and fatalities.
Cutting these trips by ten per cent could prevent 190 deaths and serious injuries, caused by motor accidents, each year, This Is Money reports.
Consumers are also being advised that by cutting their mileage, they could receive notably cheaper premiums, while a reduction in accidents will also bring down the cost of policies in the long-term.
It is estimated that cutting annual mileage by 5,000 miles could save a 35 year-old female motorist £50 on premiums, where a reduction in 10,000 miles could save £100.
Frances Browning from Churchill Insurance has the following advice for consumers, stating "Insurers use mileage to calculate premiums, but not all cut costs for low mileage."
"Ask your insurer what reductions you could get by driving less, but be honest about the mileage. If you're not sure how far you drive in a year, your MOT certificate will provide details."
