ESP could drive down insurance costs
Posted :11-02-2005
German manufacturers of an electronic stability programme (ESP) are aiming to raise awareness of the system, a move which could lower car insurance premiums.
According to research, a quarter of all accidents and 60 per cent of fatalities are caused by skidding, yet if 60 per cent of cars were fitted with the ESP device, fatalities could be cut by 2,000 each year, with serious and other injury rates also reduced.
While currently fitted in 24 per cent of new cars sold in the UK, manufacturers Bosch are aiming to push this figure up to 60 per cent, IC Wales reports.
By cutting accidents and thus insurance payouts, premium costs could be reduced through an increase of ESP devices.
Only one per cent of UK motorists currently consider ESP to have the potential to reduce accidents.
