Calls for cameras to aid insurance
Posted :02-03-2005
The government is being called upon to use police cameras to help provide motorists with cheaper motor insurance.
According to the AA, the UK's existing road traffic enforcement procedures could be used to tackle uninsured drivers
It argues that such a move will help to significantly drive down premiums for insured drivers because the insurance firms will not incur any extra expense in carrying out the enforcement measures.
Uninsured drivers cost honest motorists around £30 a year in higher insurance premiums, the AA pointed out.
"Millions of people are detected committing road traffic offences - by cameras and by local authority parking attendants, for example," said Geoff Hoyle of the AA. "The data collected in this way should be used to check that the vehicles are insured.
"This would target irresponsible road users who, as many studies have shown, are the most likely to cause accidents," he added.
The AA said as many as one in 20 cars don't have insurance.
