White van men travel a rough road

Though the ubiquitous white van man has a bad reputation on Britain's roads, the AA has found that these vehicles and their drivers face different problems than the average driver and have different needs. Van owner-drivers make a full seven per cent less insurance claims than average, the AA has found. However, each year vans will suffer a 10 per cent greater break down rate than cars, mainly due to their work rate. Kevin Sinclair, managing director of AA Insurance, said: "Our research shows that van drivers need specific benefits which haven't always been available with van insurance. After all, most drivers depend on their vehicle for their livelihood so they need all the cover they can get. "We decided to use our experience in both the insurance and breakdown industry to develop a rescue package that uniquely recognises the needs of small businesses with four vans or less." The AA now offers a special insurance package directed specifically at commercial vans. Meanwhile, Adrian Flux Insurance has started offering cover for any driver who finds themselves the victim of a road rage assault.
