New device 'could identify fleet risks'

A new system has been launched which aims to help those looking for commercial vehicle insurance manage their fleet more effectively.
Fleetwise Care from Norwich Union provides devices for each vehicle which "feed" information to the insurance provider via satellite.
The fleet manager can then obtain "comprehensive duty of care reports", which includes information on journey times, mileage covered and driver behaviour.
Norwich Union states that this can help to identify possible risks within the fleet and manage them accordingly.
"Regardless of how well fleet managers think they know their drivers, they can't be everywhere at once," said Mark Hynes, the group's director of trading.
He added that the duty of care reports will allow the manager to access previously unattainable information and lead to "a meaningful conversation with their drivers where specific instances have been pinpointed based on information provided".
The insurance provider recently launched pay-as-you-drive insurance, which calculates the cost of a motorist's cover by recording how far is travelled and how often.
